I am not a runner. However, I have always loved an adventure, a challenge, the great outdoors. This has meant that I have stayed far away from traditional road marathons, always opting for races in stunning locations or through challenging terrane.
My first ultra marathon (or any distance I had run further than 10km at school) was the Eiger E51 that I did with a friend because we had lost a friendly bet. Being 18, and the youngest competitors in the race was exhilarating, and I discovered that whilst I may not enjoy running culture, I loved being in the mountains and meeting people with incredible backgrounds and stories.
As someone who isn't a fan of road races, but needs to occasionally train for challenges, I have also done some unorthodox marathons, from (inventing?) the McDonalds Marathon, to a Gran Canarian themed one (video below).
Below are a selection of photos from races in Africa, Europe and the UK.
Marathon des Sables (MdS)
250km fully self supported over 6 days in the Sahara desert. All equipment, toiletries, food etc was carried (water provided every 10km)

Some of the incredible people I met whilst taking part in this legendary race.
The slightly manic, yet elated crazed look of someone who has just spent 6 days crossing the Sahara desert with his life on his back.

Endurance Life - Pembrokeshire
A beautiful 56km race along the coastline in south-west Wales.
My first, and probably last podium
